Liz Clark and The Voyage of Swell: Standout Moments Part 2
We recently posted a blog feature on the forever awesome Liz Clark showing an exclusive look at some of her standout moments of her life with the Voyage of Swell. The post can be found here: https://www.mizulife.com/blog/latest-news/liz-clark-and-the-voyage-of-swell-standout-moments-part-1/ There were too many incredible photos and stories to keep it to just one post, so here is the second installment. Keep on living a magical life, Liz, so we can all watch, dream, and be inspired! …I showed up to this tiny island where I didn’t speak a word of the language and this lady motioned for me to get in her bike basket and peddled me around the island on a tour!? … My buddies Ryan and Taylor found me in the middle of nowhere and brought a huge load of goodies and we scored! Taylor showing us how it’s done. …I got my first reef cut and realized that surfing perfect waves wasn’t as easy as I had imagined. …I met an 80 year old lady who lived alone in a valley and had recently killed a 600 lb wild pig. …I was using a car jack to try to re-install the motor mount boots on my engine and it exploded in my face. …I finally figured out how to backside tuberide!! …I stayed so long in this one bay that there was a school of fish under the boat and in the morning the big tunas would come chase them and the baitfish would jump onto the deck and I’d run and collect them for breakfast!!! …Raiarii and I did ‘copra’ on a remote atoll to earn a little extra cash. You break a mature coconut in half with an axe, open it and let it dry for 3 days in the sun (pray it doesn’t rain), then scoop out the meat, and stuff it all in burlap bags to sell to the oil factory. We made over 600 dollars! …I was about to go night swimming but quickly realized it was not a good idea! …I got head lice, likely right at this moment, from playing with the kids in the boatyard!?! It was horrible!? …I found an abandoned fish trap with 15-20 sharks stuck inside and freed them!! …my 1,500 nautical mile, solo passage from the Line Islands back to French Polynesia turned into a 15-day upwind hell ride against lightning storms and gale winds. …I came upon a lost baby seabird after cyclone Oli went through and I hand fed her fish and kept her as my pet. …Jimmy Buffett played at a tiny venue and I sailed up for the concert, ended up singing on stage with him, and then took him surfing the next day!? …I got ciguatera from eating a lagoon fish and the western doctor told me to drink milk!? I spewed from both ends in a bucket and writhed in muscle pain for 10 days because milk activated the toxin. Finally a Paumotu grandmother made me the local plant remedy and I got better quickly. …I rubbed the magic crystals and shortly after Lea and I stumbled upon whales who wanted to play!!!!
